volume 135 in the advances in chemical physics series honors ilya prigogine and his life ` s work, covering topics that he illuminated, and contains contributions by internationally recognized researchers. dr. prigogine, was awarded the nobel prize in chemistry in 1977 for his contributions to nonequilibrium thermodynamics, particularly the theory of dissipative structures. born in moscow, russia, he obtained both his undergraduate and graduate degrees in chemistry at the universite libre de bruxelles and was founder of the university of texas at austins ilya prigogine center (now known as the center for complex quantum systems), where research on quantum and classical statistical mechanics, thermodynamics, and many-body dynamics is still carried out through today. he was appointed director of the international solvay institute in brussels, belgium, and was awarded the title of viscount by the king of belgium in 1989. ilya prigogine received numerous national awards and prizes throughout his life and received 53 honorary degrees. he passed away in may 2003 at the age of 86.
