West Point educated, his experience as an infantry officer during the Mexican War inspires and excites Hancock to forego the study of law and pursue a career as a professional soldier. Passionately loved by his wife and family, revered by his soldiers, and feared by his enemies, he stands as the War of Rebellion's premier Union corps commander. During the Rebellion Grant, Meade, and McClellan, who referred to him as "Hancock the Superb," continually call upon Hancock, who by the force of his presence could change the tide of battle. Sherman brings him to the Great Plains after the Civil War but with a different outcome. Hero to the nation, he is the Democratic Party's presidential candidate in 1880, though he cared little for politics. Winfield's story is one of dedication to the country, the Constitution, and a lifetime of service.
