Missy's mother is owned by, and cooks for, the Mathews family. Her father furnishes supplies to the Matthews' kitchen. Born into slavery, Missy is half black and half Choctaw Indian. Missy's honesty, devotion to the family and her dedication to her duties as a slave, wins the hearts of the Matthews'. Many lives are changed by the young woman.The end of slavery after the Civil War was the start of a new day, which depicts the journey to freedom.
