When he doesn't return, the task of trail boss lands in his lap. During his travels with the herd, he gains an unexpected trail hand and runs into a band of rustlers; the man the Chisholm trail is named after, Bass Reeves, the first black Texas Ranger; and a famous Indian chief. On his return home, he has another unexpected visitor and goes after his dream - a wild stallion in the hills. Billy never considered himself a hero, but others had a different idea.
